Autumn Greetings KVSC Members, September 18, 2008
We’re pleased to bring you another update from Your Sound Alternative, KVSC. This time of year is filled with programming updates and developing our priorities for the academic year. First off, thanks to every member and listener, we were able to qualify for a community service grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. The grant is truly attributed to every listener, volunteer and staff member at the radio station. We qualified for the funds under a listening index and donations formula—and it would not have happened without your support—thank you! It’s our objective to use the grant funding to enhance programming, promote KVSC further in the community and continue technology upgrades.
KVSC is a proud sponsor of the Tuesday Night Film Series at the Pioneer Place on 5th in St. Cloud. The St. Cloud Arts Commission hosts the showings that are sure to inspire. The independent, foreign and documentary films have never been screened in the St. Cloud area. The movies include Mad Hot Ballroom (9/23), Ringu (10/28), Waiting For Guffman (11/18), Richard III (1/20/09), The Red Violin (2/17/09), Children of Heaven (3/10/09) and Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room (4/7/09). The show times will 6:30p.m. and 9:00p.m. with a nominal cost of $5.00. Discussion groups and/or special events follow each screening; you can read further about each film by visiting KVSC.org. Please come and enjoy stadium seating, beverages and like-minded film fans!
Aside from this letter, you may have received a membership renewal slip and return envelope. This means it has been 12-18 months since your last pledge to 88.1FM. Your financial support helps us succeed in so many ways—from programming dynamic music and news year-round to securing other sources of funding. Memberships can also be renewed by calling the announcers during pledge week (October 18-26) or visit us on-line at www.kvsc.org. Just click on the Donate to KVSC link on the left side of the main page. Please review pledge perks (coffee mug, new T-shirts, baseball cap and fleece vests) and what businesses are on our member discount card.
Attention members who pledged in the spring of this year. There was an oversight on the discount membership card. We forgot to list a new business on the card! GW Coffee and Tobacco a locally-run shop located at 21 Wilson Avenue Northeast that features roasted coffee beans is offering 10% off purchases of $10 or above. Our apologies to Marilyn and staff at G.W. for this oversight.
A few programs have been shifted around on our Saturday broadcast schedule. We’ve expanded Lupita’s Ritmos Latinos (Latin Rhythms). The show starts after the 12p.m. news and is now extended to 3p.m. It is followed by 2 hours of Reggae/Dub/Ska during the Saturday Sunsplash and finally Neighborhoods of the World from 5-7p.m. It’s the same excellent programming, just slightly adjusted to meet programming changes.
The KVSC newsroom has been preparing a full slate of news programming for the fall elections. Nearly every Wednesday in October we will feature local candidates running for seats in the Minnesota House of Representatives. Join us for live, debate-style interviews at 4:30p.m. every week to learn the priorities of each parties’ candidates. Also, St. Cloud State University President Earl Potter will join us on November 5 at 4:30p.m. for Presidential Update Live to share the latest news on campus initiatives and priorities.
Monday Night Live is well into its 17th season of bringing listener and viewers a delicious sampling of local and regional artists. The show is entirely produced and hosted by students at St. Cloud State University. The following artists will appear in our Performance Studio this fall semester:

XXX Trivia: 30 Years of Trivia Lovin’ is our cheeky theme for KVSC’s 30th annual trivia weekend. The 50-hour contest is scheduled for February 13-15, 2009. Our trivia writers will dote on some of the most intense loves of all time, including Napoleon and Josephine, Pebbles and Bam Bam, Harold and Maude, Aphrodite and Aries, John and Yoko, Harry and Sally, Lois and Clark…the list is endless.
All smitten team captains and trivia players—now is the time to gather all the information you hold dear. Volunteering is also a key way to get connected to our trivia weekend. We’ll post volunteer sign-ups and phone bank information in mid-December at our studios. There is more trivia information posted at www.kvsc.org, including a more detailed explanation of our theme.
Please keep KVSC in mind on several fronts. We offer free radio training to any community member (details can be found at our website). We’re featuring some fantastic online concert ticket drawings at KVSC.org and you can submit announcements about secular non-profit events in our community to be read free of charge on the air. Thanks for making KVSC a part of your radio world and supporting independent public radio at 88.1FM.
Best,
Jo McMullen-Boyer
