KVSC's Own Wayne Bergerson:
1) When did you get involved with 88.1FM?
Long enough to see most of the digital revolution in broadcasting, probably around 1983-84 it was records (those thin black Frisbees), and reel to reel to two track tape.
2) What show(s) do you currently host on KVSC and what
programs have you hosted in the past?
I started as the co-host of Classic Rock with Al Neff, and another show with Greg Thompson, Time Passages, which morphed into Granite City Rock Cafe. Rock was good for me, but my heart has always been with folk, bluegrass, and acoustic music, so I started Fretz and have settled in for as long as the listeners and the station will let me.
3) Please list some of the artists and musicians you consider to be a must play on your show(s).
Short answer to all, each time it’s different. This week it could be Fred Eaglesmith, next Richard Thompson, or Tony Trischka to any artist that mainstream media forgets needs to be played often.
4) Why are you involved with independent community radio at 88.1FM?
It is a place where the station and the announcers are allowed to have a personality.
5) What is in your CD player right now (be honest)?
In all truth I was just listening to “The Guess Who--Live 1969”.
6) Please disclose the most embarrassing music moment or concert you've attended or album you've bought (perhaps even shameful).
There are so many, it’s hard to narrow it down. I guess I would pick one night at Kevin Lang Show, he saw that I was enjoying the spirit with gusto and called me on stage to sing the song “Mama’s Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up To Be Cowboys.” There is a reason why mike stands are weighted.
7) What are your hobbies and interests?
Music, reading sci-fi and fantasies books for escape, writing poetry, calligraphy and attempting to make music on guitar.
8) When you are not at work or at KVSC where can you most likely be found?
At a restaurant with a book and enjoying a cup of coffee and a burger.
9) If it were the end of the world (?) and you could only take five things with you what would they be (be honest):
First and foremost important are my books. Without reading I would go crazy. Next, a cat for company, there is nothing better than when a cat wants to sit on your lap and be pet. Also my CD’s and albums with a way to play them. i.e. a hard crank generator, a good sturdy tent to protect me from the weather or maybe a good sturdy bike to range out over the waste land.
10) What is the most annoying request or listener inquiry you remember receiving?
I guess it would be that age old bain of all announcers, the person who calls during the weather forecast and when you answer the phone and they want to know the weather.
11) What do you think is the future of radio?
Talk about a loaded question. As it is right now commercial radio is dead, major public radio is on its way to the grave. Small public stations like KVSC and many others throughout the country are what are right and alive. If commercial radio and major public radio stations would return to their roots, live on the fly seat of your parts broadcasting radio would be a force, till then we have KVSC keeping radio alive.
